Compared to other start-up recycling programs in the region, Kirkwood's recently launched curbside service has brought in more pounds of material per household than ever before.
Kirkwood households have posted an unprecedented recycling number for a start-up program in St. Louis County, according to the company that processes recyclables from the majority of homes in the region. In the first month of Kirkwood’s curbside recycling program, which launched on Jan. 3, residents wheeled 74 pounds of materials to their curbs per home, on average. About a dozen residents braved the threat of icy road conditions Wednesday night to ask city officials about Kirkwood's new recycling program that will start Jan. 3. Resident concerns included new sanitation pick-up schedules, what materials can go into the recycling carts and whether the city plans to broaden the curbside program to multi-family homes and apartments. Kirkwood Public Works Director Todd Rehg said that although the new program will reduce trash pickups from two days a week to one, the city tried to keep pickups consistent with the current schedule when designing its new sanitation districts. Kathleen: Our Public Works department is working with City Council to get curbside recycling set up for apartment and condominium complexes (and businesses). You probably already know this, but our sanitation service is not free (or supported by sales tax revenue). Residents pay a monthly fee for it. Thanks!   more ›
