The Kirkwood Planning and Zoning commission met on Wednesday night with residents to explain the changes coming to the zoning code.
The first planning and zoning code for the city of Kirkwood was adopted in 1967. One of the entries in the code explains the steps necessary if a person wants to open a typewriter repair shop. “If someone comes in to Planning and Zoning and says he wants to open a computer-repair shop, we would have to go by that code,” said Jeremy Knapp, zoning administrator, during a Planning and Zoning meeting with residents where he informed them of the changes coming to the zoning code. “We need to have something more simple, more modern.” Knapp showed a PowerPoint presentation that highlighted the main issues with the current zoning code. Knapp said the current code was hard to follow, lacked consistency and had several entries that were outdated. …

In the first meeting of the calendar year, Kirkwood City Council addressed the concern of rising health care costs for city employees and heard the annual Human Rights Commission report.
Kirkwood City employees are "significantly less healthy than the norm," according to a letter by Georgia Ragland, assistant chief administrative officer for the city of Kirkwood. Rangland's letter addressed the issue of health care costs for city employees per new bill 10110. Ragland's letter was referring to the results of services rendered by Interactive Health Solutions (IHS), a workplace wellness company contracted by the city. IHS then made the city an offer for an incentive program that would focus on rewarding employees for improving their health, or simply taking part in the IHS services. At the Jan. 6…

Kirkwood City Council voted on a number of ordinances, addressing both Wal-Mart expansion and commercial truck drivers at the council's final meeting of the year.
Kirkwood City Council approved a resolution to expand the Wal-Mart shopping center on South Kirkwood Road by more than 10,000 square feet at its meeting Thursday night. The expansion will create a larger grocery section. "We need to not go blindly into the change," said Councilor Paul Ward during discussion of the resolution. Ward and other members of the council also voted to rescind an April 2005 letter allowing the shopping center to reserve 65 parking spaces between March and August for outdoor sales. The spaces will no longer be made available after the expansion, which is not set to begin for several months. The council also approved a development plan to construct a Buffalo Wild Wings Restaurant on 1244 S. Kirkwood Rd. The new …

On the Mobil issue, Planning and Zoning only listened to the Wallis company's proposal. They failed to ask or allow any public comment or interaction from the residents living in the area. I hope they make changes to allow public comment whenever there is a business proposal being considered in Kirkwood in any future proposals.   more ›
