Kirkwood City Council Votes in Favor of New Requirements for Liquor, Tobacco, Carwash Businesses

The council voted in favor of the new requirements in a first reading of the amendment to the code. A second and final vote will be held at a Jan. 17 council meeting.

The Kirkwood City Council held a public hearing at their Jan 3. meeting to discuss adding an amendment to the city's zoning code that would require owners of liquor, tobacco or car wash businesses to secure a special use permit before developing. If passed, business owners would need to go before the Kirkwood Planning and Zoning Commission and Kirkwood City Council to obtain this permit. Dirt Cheap Not Coming to Kirkwood Until Council Votes on U-Gas

Contrary to a sign on the property, a Dirt Cheap is not coming to 915 North Kirkwood Rd., at least not until the Kirkwood City Council votes on a proposed U-Gas station.

A sign advertising a Dirt Cheap discount liquor store coming soon to 915 North Kirkwood Rd. has caused confusion in Kirkwood this week. Dirt Cheap filed for a commercial occupancy permit for 915 North Kirkwood Rd., but the City of Kirkwood revoked the permit because an appeal from U-Gas to develop the property is pending, according to Kirkwood Public Works Director Todd Rehg. "We can't have an application for a special use and commercial occupany permit," Rehg told Patch. The Dirt Cheap sign was put up illegally, according to Rehg. The property owner has until Friday to remove the sign before facing court citations, Rehg said.
