Webster Nearly Topples Chaminade in Memorable Clash

In a tight district final, Chaminade uses 40 points from senior guard Bradley Beal to defeat Webster, 80-76.

In a high-caliber district final worthy of a state championship game, Chaminade used 40 points from senior guard Bradley Beal to defeat the Webster Groves Statesmen, 80-76, on Saturday afternoon at Webster’s Roberts Gymnasium. “I couldn’t be more proud of our guys … they’re a great team, and hats off to Chaminade, but I could not be more proud of our team,” said Webster coach Jay Blossom, after the game. Webster finishes its season with a record of 24-5, and bids farewell to a handful of seniors, who measured up to the winning tradition of the school. Chaminade moves ahead to face Marquette in the sectionals of the state finals on Wednesday at UMSL. “I knew it was going to be a great game,” said Chaminade coach Kelvin Lee. “Webster …

Webster Enjoys Sweet Senior Night Win Over Oakville

Senior night for the Webster Groves boys' basketball team turns into a memorable evening as the Statesmen win their 70th straight league game.

Senior Night is twice as sweet when your team is romping its way through the late-season schedule, assembling victories not only in support of a 70-game conference winning streak, but also against rival programs. Webster Groves is enjoying the extra sweetness following a resounding 67-40 nonconference defeat of the Oakville Tigers on Wednesday, which added to a lovely Senior Night ceremony highlighting senior players and their parents. Prior to the game, Webster announced its seniors: Edgar Giles, James Kenner, Gabe Smith, Jason Meehan, Kendal Shell, and Joe Henderson. The players escorted their families to half court amid flowers and balloons. “All our seniors played well tonight, but Gabe coming in at the end of the game and hitting a …

Webster Groves Holds Off Parkway West to Extend Streak

Webster Groves extends its Suburban South Conference winning streak to 69 games with a 56-46 victory over Parkway West.

Webster Groves took the energy away from the Parkway West crowd early with an 11-0 run to begin the game, and then held off the Longhorns for a key Suburban South Conference road win. The Statesmen extended thier league winning streak to 69 games with the 56-46 win and improved to 16-4 overall, and 3-0 in conference play. Parkway West is now 8-11, including 2-2 in the Suburban South Conference. Webster took four charges in the first half as it mapped out a defensive strategy designed to pressure the Longhorns' star forward, senior Larry Toomey, who earlier in the week reached 1,000 career points. “We’re kind of getting back to re-establishing some basics on defense, and we put a lot of energy into defending Toomey," Webster coach Jay …

Webster Boys Use Late Run to Outlast U-City, Extend Streak

Webster Groves senior guard James Kenner's late 3-pointer lifts the Statesmen to a 72-63 win over University City in a Suburban South Conference contest.

Webster Groves senior guard James Kenner felt compelled to tell the truth late Friday night. Kenner, in fact, didn't have much confidence in his fourth quarter 3-point shot that propelled the Statesmen to a hard-fought 72-63 win over University City in a Suburban South Conference contest at Roberts gymnasium. "When I let it go, I wasn't sure about it," he said. Neither was Webster coach Jay Blossom. "He's kind of been in a shooting slump. It was like, ‘What are you doing?’” Kenner's shot from the right baseline swished through the net to halt a U-City rally and give Webster the lead for good, 64-63. "Shot of the game," said a relieved Blossom afterward. The win stretched Webster's conference winning streak to 68. It also gives the …

Webster Groves Wears Down Marquette to Improve to 8-2

Webster Groves beat Marquette, 56-43, as Rayshawn Simmons and James Kenner lead the Statesmen to their eighth victory of this season.

Webster Groves triumphed over Marquette on Tuesday evening as the Statesmen's normal cast of characters delivered solid play. Rayshawn Simmons and James Kenner each hit a pair of 3-pointers to lead Webster to its eighth victory of the season. The final score of 56-43 did not reflect the game's closeness and the unlikely game-changer for Webster came not in the form of Kenner, who led all scorers with 20 points, or Simmons, who contributed 14 points. Instead, the visitors success against the Mustangs was triggered by a series of plays from junior reserve forward Wiley Jones. Jones, who sees regular action as part of Webster coach Jay Blossom's bench, followed a pull-up jumper with a gutsy steal in the fourth quarter to turn the tide in …

Webster Stumbles Against Vianney, Regroups With Win Over U-City

The Statesmen lose their first game of the year, 68-61, to Vianney at Meramec on Tuesday. However, Webster bounces back to beat University City on Wednesday.

(Editor's update: Webster Groves lost to Troy, 66-58, in the fifth-place game on Thursday) The Vianney boys basketball team was no stranger to matchups against top local teams as it prepared to face the Webster Groves Statesmen in the second round of the Meramec Holiday Tournament on Tuesday evening. Vianney coach Kevin Walsh noted ahead of the game that his Golden Griffins squad had learned the hard way how to play against the best teams. "All five of our losses on the year have come against top-ranked teams," said Walsh as he reflected on the team's tough early season schedule. Webster Groves is not only a top team, but brought a championship pedigree to the Meramec tournament, having won the event last season and coming in runner-up …

Webster Groves Rolls Past Troy at Family Arena; Blossom Wins No. 300

Webster Groves basketball coach Jay Blossom won his 300th career game as his Statesmen beat Troy, 74-62, at the GAC/Suburban Shootout in St. Charles.

Webster Groves basketball coach Jay Blossom reached a career milestone on Sunday night while the Troy Trojans are still searching for that signature win that will make their season. Both storylines unfolded on Sunday evening as Webster Groves defeated Troy, 74-62, in the 17th and final game of the inaugural GAC/Suburban Shootout at the Family Arena in St. Charles. For Blossom, it was victory No. 300 in a coaching career that has taken him to such places as Northwest Hughesville (near Sedalia) and Waterloo, Ill. before coming to Webster Groves 12 years ago. "It means I've had a lot of great players, great assistant coaches and great administrators along the way," Blossom said. "I can still remember my first victory. When I was at Northwest…
