Webster Groves, Kirkwood Reel in Postseason Hoops Honors

Webster junior guard Jordan Thompson is the Suburban South Conference Player of the Year.

It took a 40-point performance from Chaminade’s Bradley Beal to stop the Webster Groves boys’ 13-game winning streak, and prevent the Statesmen from claiming a district championship. Still, Webster Groves finished 24-5, including a 7-0 mark to take first place this season in the Suburban South Conference. That has earned head coach Jay Blossom league Coach of the Year honors, and several Statesmen players have also received postseason recognition. Junior 6-foot-4 guard Rayshawn Simmons has been named to the all-conference first team. Simmons averaged 13.5 points and 4.2 assists per game this season. Simmons flashed some of what is to come next season when he poured in a career-high 33 points in the riveting 80-76 loss in the Class 5 …

Webster Groves Holds Off Parkway West to Extend Streak

Webster Groves extends its Suburban South Conference winning streak to 69 games with a 56-46 victory over Parkway West.

Webster Groves took the energy away from the Parkway West crowd early with an 11-0 run to begin the game, and then held off the Longhorns for a key Suburban South Conference road win. The Statesmen extended thier league winning streak to 69 games with the 56-46 win and improved to 16-4 overall, and 3-0 in conference play. Parkway West is now 8-11, including 2-2 in the Suburban South Conference. Webster took four charges in the first half as it mapped out a defensive strategy designed to pressure the Longhorns' star forward, senior Larry Toomey, who earlier in the week reached 1,000 career points. “We’re kind of getting back to re-establishing some basics on defense, and we put a lot of energy into defending Toomey," Webster coach Jay …

Webster Boys Use Late Run to Outlast U-City, Extend Streak

Webster Groves senior guard James Kenner's late 3-pointer lifts the Statesmen to a 72-63 win over University City in a Suburban South Conference contest.

Webster Groves senior guard James Kenner felt compelled to tell the truth late Friday night. Kenner, in fact, didn't have much confidence in his fourth quarter 3-point shot that propelled the Statesmen to a hard-fought 72-63 win over University City in a Suburban South Conference contest at Roberts gymnasium. "When I let it go, I wasn't sure about it," he said. Neither was Webster coach Jay Blossom. "He's kind of been in a shooting slump. It was like, ‘What are you doing?’” Kenner's shot from the right baseline swished through the net to halt a U-City rally and give Webster the lead for good, 64-63. "Shot of the game," said a relieved Blossom afterward. The win stretched Webster's conference winning streak to 68. It also gives the …

Webster Groves, 6-0, Dominant in Meramec Tourney Opener

Webster Groves opened the 33rd annual Meramec Holiday Festival Basketball Tournament by defeating Eureka, 56-26, on Sunday.

Webster Groves opened the 33rd annual Meramec Holiday Festival High School Basketball Tournament against the Eureka Wildcats on Sunday afternoon. For Eureka, it was an opportunity not only to avenge a loss to Webster earlier in the season but also to try and notch its first victory of the season. Eureka was unable to take advantage of the opportunity as the Wildcats fell to 0-6 after losing to Webster, 56-26. The fourth-seeded Statesmen climbed to 6-0 and will take on 12-seeded Vianney in the tourney's second round at 4 p.m on Tuesday. Vianney surprised No. 5-seed McCluer, 75-68, on Sunday. Webster senior Kendal Shell, who had 11 points in the victory, commented on his team's slow start. "We better start off stronger against the higher-…

Webster Groves Rolls Past Troy at Family Arena; Blossom Wins No. 300

Webster Groves basketball coach Jay Blossom won his 300th career game as his Statesmen beat Troy, 74-62, at the GAC/Suburban Shootout in St. Charles.

Webster Groves basketball coach Jay Blossom reached a career milestone on Sunday night while the Troy Trojans are still searching for that signature win that will make their season. Both storylines unfolded on Sunday evening as Webster Groves defeated Troy, 74-62, in the 17th and final game of the inaugural GAC/Suburban Shootout at the Family Arena in St. Charles. For Blossom, it was victory No. 300 in a coaching career that has taken him to such places as Northwest Hughesville (near Sedalia) and Waterloo, Ill. before coming to Webster Groves 12 years ago. "It means I've had a lot of great players, great assistant coaches and great administrators along the way," Blossom said. "I can still remember my first victory. When I was at Northwest…

Webster Boys Have Clear Goal: Win State Hoops Title

After nine straight conference titles and seven straight 20-win seasons, Webster Groves coach Jay Blossom is reaching for the ultimate goal.

Coach Jay Blossom of Webster Groves searches for words to describe his thoughts on this season, and instead rattles off a few stats that barely do justice to the standard his team holds itself to. "Nine straight conference titles and seven straight 20-win seasons," Blossoms explains, "we have a lot of work to do to uphold the standards of this program." Coach Blossom's statistics inadequately explain his team's recent and long-term success because he leaves out the fact that two seasons ago Webster won the state championship, and last season compiled 27 wins while exiting in the quarterfinals of the state championship tournament. The Statesmen are currently 3-0 and will host Eureka on Friday at 7 p.m. They captured the championship of …

Statesmen Continue Dominance at Webster Classic

Webster Groves defeated Lee's Summit, 61-43, to win the Webster Classic championship for the sixth time in the past seven years.

If Webster Groves felt any pressure before the championship of its Webster Classic tournament, they weren't showing it prior to tip-off. Senior guard Kendal Shell acknowledged that their opponent, Lee's Summit, had a strong running game and his team would need to "work hard to keep up on defense" but, he added, "our offense is clicking and we feel we can score at will." Webster coach Jay Blossom was far more conservative in his assessment of the Tigers, stating, "Our transition defense will be real important today; they are a strong shooting team." At the final buzzer, Shell proved to be accurate in his pregame expectation as the Statesmen soundly defeated Lee's Summit, 61-43, on its home court to take the Classic championship for the …

Webster Classic: Statesmen Survive Close Call

Last-second basket lifts Webster Groves to a 78-76 victory over Belvidere North in opening-round play in the 11th Annual Webster Classic.

In the final game on the opening night of the Webster Classic boys basketball tournament, host Webster Groves faced Belvidere North, which hails from approximately 90 miles north of Chicago. The Blue Thunder also hailed 3-pointers throughout its game against the Statesmen, but despite their impressive performance from the perimeter, Webster Groves used a last-second shot to win the game, 78-76. Webster Groves moves on to play Oakville on Friday night. Webster won the 2008 state championship and Oakville was a state finalist last season. Only one team has beaten Webster in its tournament in the past six years. In what would become a theme for the evening, Belvidere opened up the scoring with a pair of field goals and a 3-point basket to …
