Webster junior guard Jordan Thompson is the Suburban South Conference Player of the Year.
It took a 40-point performance from Chaminade’s Bradley Beal to stop the Webster Groves boys’ 13-game winning streak, and prevent the Statesmen from claiming a district championship. Still, Webster Groves finished 24-5, including a 7-0 mark to take first place this season in the Suburban South Conference. That has earned head coach Jay Blossom league Coach of the Year honors, and several Statesmen players have also received postseason recognition. Junior 6-foot-4 guard Rayshawn Simmons has been named to the all-conference first team. Simmons averaged 13.5 points and 4.2 assists per game this season. Simmons flashed some of what is to come next season when he poured in a career-high 33 points in the riveting 80-76 loss in the Class 5 …

Kirkwood (10-10) is 2-1 in Suburban South Conference play.
A close loss Saturday at home was certainly not the kind of momentum that the Kirkwood boys varsity basketball team was hoping to bring into this week's crucial matchups. The Pioneers can still win the Suburban South Conference title this season, but will likely need to win at Parkway North on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and then beat Webster Groves at home on Friday at 7 p.m. Kirkwood fell, 62-60, to Parkway South (16-4) in a nonconference game on Saturday that ended its two-game winning streak. The Pioneers struggled to find a player who could step up and lead the team with the game on the line. “We’re 10-10 on the season and you see spurts where we can really play, and then there are other times where it’s a struggle," Kirkwood coach Bill Gunn …

Kirkwood plays good defense late in the game, and withstands the Flyers' final flurry to win, 54-53.
The Kirkwood boys basketball team came up with big defensive plays when they needed to and withstood a last-second steal to hang on for a home win over Lindbergh, 54-53, on Friday night. The lead changed hands seven times in the game, which saw a spread of six points or more only once. Kirkwood was able to hang on to its one-point lead late while junior guard Clark Randall nailed four out of four from the stripe in the final minutes to help the Pioneers stay in front. “The difference at the end was we were able to get defensive stops without fouling them,” Randall said. “We got a five-second call, and then we got a really big rebound, then we were able to hit free throws and attack the basket.” “The guys kept fighting,” Lindbergh coach …

Webster dominates Mehlville, 66-30, to improve to 6-0 at home and 14-4 overall this season.
The Webster Groves boys basketball team jumped on Mehlville early and never looked back. The Statesmen used a 14-0 run at the beginning of the game to cruise to a 66-30 win over the Panthers in a non-conference game on Tuesday night. Webster is now 6-0 at home this season, and 14-4 overall. Webster posted its third win since losing to East Coast powerhouse Jamesville-DeWitt (from New York) on a recent trip to the Basketball Hall of Fame to play in its annual high school tournament. “We came together as a team on our trip to Massachusetts,” said senior forward Jason Meehan, who had 10 points on the night. “We matured a lot in the last few weeks and there’s a mutual understanding now that those big games cannot be just a one-time game, we …

The Pioneers have won three of their past four games after defeating Oakville, 53-44 at Kirkwood.
The Kirkwood Pioneers jumped out to a big 23-8 lead early, and held off the Oakville Tigers en route to a 53-44 victory. Kirkwood is now 9-6 on the season. “We were very consistent in the first half and had good shot selections. I did not like our pass and shot selection in the second half as much, but even though we did not perform great in the second half our bench helped us keep the lead and get the win,” said Kirkwood coach Brad Sutterer. Mired in a three-game losing streak, Oakville was hoping to catch the Pioneers at an opportune time as Kirkwood was coming off a loss to Rock Bridge the previous Friday night. Oakville (5-11) coach Aaron Bosch acknowledged the challenge of letting his opponent jump out to a big lead in a road game. “…

Marquette uses its inside presence to wear down the Pioneers and coast to a 63-50 victory.
In this matchup of former Suburban West Conference rivals, both teams were coming off of losses, but only one could right the ship with a win. On this night, that team was Marquette, which used its inside presence to wear down the Kirkwood Pioneers and coast to a 63-50 victory. The entire game was a tale of two styles. Marquette (8-7) was intent to dump it inside and drive the lane, forcing the smaller frontcourt players from Kirkwood (8-7) into foul trouble. Kirkwood, on the other hand, tried to rely on its outside shooting, which was good in spurts, but was not enough to pull out a win on the road. Kirkwood was led by junior guard and leading-scorer Myles Artis, who finished with 12 points. Marquette’s defense did a good job of not …

Chaminade's Bradley Beal scores 36 points as the Red Devils beat Kirkwood, 86-47, in the championship game of the Denver Miller Tournament at Kirkwood.
It may have been a tough loss for the Pioneers, but Kirkwood at least experienced a game against a team that is a legend in the making around St. Louis. Chaminade's Bradley Beal scored 36 points as the Red Devils hammered Kirkwood, 86-47, in the championship game of the Denver Miller Tournament at Kirkwood Senior High School. The win for Chaminade extends its undefeated streak to 16 games. While the end result was a lopsided loss for Kirkwood, the Pioneers were trading blow for blow with the mighty Red Devils until the final minutes of the first quarter. "They (Kirkwood) were playing loose and had nothing to lose and they were beating us down the floor and getting into transition," Chaminade head coach Kelvin Lee said. "But once we stopped…

Kirkwood High School advances to the championship game of the Denver Miller Tournament after a 65-40 win over Duchesne.
With three players scoring in double figures, the Kirkwood Pioneers advanced to the championship game of the Denver Miller Tournament on Saturday with a 65-40 win over the Duchesne Pioneers on Friday night. The win for Kirkwood (8-5, 1-0 Suburban South) extends its winning streak to four games and they will face Chaminade on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the championship game of the tournament. "I thought that there was a point late in the second quarter where it was 21-19 and we finally decided to turn up the pressure defensively and we finished out the quarter on a 9-0 run to go up 30-19 at the half," Kirkwood head coach Bill Gunn said. "Our defense was just outstanding as we held them to just 20 points in the second half and we felt really good…

Myles Artis scores 14 points as the Pioneers roll over Metro Academic & Classical High School, 71-21, in the first round of the 2011 Denver Miller Tournament.
Behind Myles Artis' 14 points, the Kirkwood High School boys basketball team rolled over Metro Academic & Classical High School, 71-21, in the first round of the 2011 Denver Miller Tournament at Kirkwood. The win for Kirkwood (7-5, 1-0 Suburban West) extends the Pioneers' winning streak to three games and set them up against Duchesne in the semifinals of the tournament on Friday evening at 7 p.m. "They (Metro) pressed us, so we got the chance to work on our press offense a little bit and they also played a couple different zone defenses, so we got to also work on some zone execution on our offense," Kirkwood head coach Bill Gunn said. "Everyone on the roster got the chance to contribute and that was really nice for us to see." Artis’ 14 …

Kirkwood takes advantage of a late Lindbergh turnover to win at Meramec, 51-49, as Justin Byrd made two free throws with 6.8 seconds left.
In a game that was extremely tight throughout, Kirkwood took advantage of a late Lindbergh turnover to win, 51-49, as junior guard Justin Byrd made two free throws with 6.8 seconds left. The teams played on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the loser's bracket of the Meramec Holiday Festival Tournament. After the Pioneers gained possession with 13 seconds left, Byrd drove the lane, got fouled and made the clutch shots. The Flyers missed a shot as time expired. "There were so many changes of emotion in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter," said Kirkwood coach Bill Gunn. "I'm just happy with our kids that, no matter what, we still played through it and got stops when we needed to. And we hit free throws when we needed to. "We've talked…
