Kirkwood High Ranks No. 3 in Missouri in U.S. News Survey

It's three steps up from last year's rankings by the magazine, which put only Kirkwood at No. 6 among the top-ranked Missouri high schools. Do you agree with the list?

Kirkwood High School ranked No. 3 on the 2013 list of top-ranked Missouri schools released by U.S. News & World Report today.  That's up from No. 6 in the 2012 rankings. The magazine released its annual report of 2013 Best High Schools Rankings today. St. Louis-area high schools swept the top five in the U.S. News survey. In additional to Kirkwood High at No. 3, they included Metro Academic and Classical High School in St. Louis at No. 1; Clayton High at No. 2; Marquette High in Chesterfield at No. 4; and Eureka High at No. 5. Webster Groves High School was ranked 21 among the top 26 Missouri high schools in the magazine's survey. Kirkwood Sharpshooter Schneider Dominates Mehlville

Kirkwood's Maggie Schneider scores every goal as the Pioneers beat Mehlville, 4-0, in the third-place game of the Webster-Kirkwood Classic.

Kirkwood sophomore forward Maggie Schneider sure knows how to throw a Sweet 16 party. Schneider celebrated her 16th birthday with a four-goal outburst on Saturday to lead the Pioneers to a 4-0 win over Mehlville in the third-place game of the Webster-Kirkwood Classic at Kirkwood High School. The Panthers fell to 6-7 this season. Kirkwood, which improved to 8-3, earned a measure of revenge against Mehlville, who beat the Pioneers 2-1 on penalty kicks in the first week of the season. Schneider proved to be a one-girl wrecking crew, scoring two of her goals in a span of 1:43 in the second half to put the match away. Kirkwood Water Polo Plays Well at Founder's Cup

Kirkwood finishes in fourth place and posts wins over University City, 11-6, and Clayton, 13-9.

The De Smet water polo juggernaut cruised to first place in the Founder’s Cup held between last Tuesday (April 5) and Saturday at various area schools, including University City, Clayton, and Ladue. Meanwhile, Kirkwood, which finished in fourth place after losing to John Burroughs in the third-place contest, posted back-to-back wins in its opening matches, defeating University City, 11-6, and Clayton, 13-9. The Pioneers secured a spot in the championship bracket by defeating Oakville on Friday night, 11-7, and earned the right to face De Smet the next morning and conceded a 17-7 loss. “We’re excited about our effort in this tournament. Pioneers Forge Into Spring Sports Season

Spring sports are under way at Kirkwood High School. We have a preview of the teams preparing for competition.

Kirkwood's spring sports teams are gearing up for play as the weather warms and practices shift from tryouts to game preparation. Take a look at what's ahead for the Pioneers involved in spring competition: Baseball Rain kept the Kirkwood team off the practice field until last week, and the Pioneers will jump into action this week with a trip to Florida to play squads from around the country. Coach Ken Shaw says the team is no longer on the "young" side, and with seven returning starters, he hopes to improve dramatically on the 8-16 record from 2010. Three players are in the mix for the top starting pitcher position. Junior Ryan Bearden, who won five games last season, will be joined by juniors Connor Jacobs and Griffin Goodrich in vying …

Kirkwood Boys Dominate Duchesne to Move Into Title Game

Kirkwood High School advances to the championship game of the Denver Miller Tournament after a 65-40 win over Duchesne.

With three players scoring in double figures, the Kirkwood Pioneers advanced to the championship game of the Denver Miller Tournament on Saturday with a 65-40 win over the Duchesne Pioneers on Friday night. The win for Kirkwood (8-5, 1-0 Suburban South) extends its winning streak to four games and they will face Chaminade on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the championship game of the tournament. "I thought that there was a point late in the second quarter where it was 21-19 and we finally decided to turn up the pressure defensively and we finished out the quarter on a 9-0 run to go up 30-19 at the half," Kirkwood head coach Bill Gunn said. Kirkwood School Board Approves New Language Course, Sells Bonds

The board votes to add Chinese language study to high school offerings and announces the successful sale of Build America Bonds.

The Kirkwood School Board had a full agenda Tuesday night. On the table was the approval of a new course of study for the high school language department, reports from Westchester Elementary and VISTA alternative school and an annual review from the Kirkwood School District Foundation. The board also announced the sale of bonds from Prop 1 and set the 2011-12 kindergarten tuition rate. City Recognizes Kirkwood High Diversity Efforts

Student essayists are honored at council meeting.

The Kirkwood Human Rights Commission honored five winners from Kirkwood High School in the Human Rights Commission Essay Contest at the Dec. 2 meeting of the Kirkwood City Council. Kirkwood High School juniors Emilie Willingham, Emily Goyda, Ellen Fritschle, Dajae Williams and Rachel Kibby received gift certificates from the commission in the amount of $100, $75, $75, $50 and $25 respectively. Students were asked to write about what they saw as the long- and short-term solutions to the problems with the lack of sensitivity toward diversity in Kirkwood. Willingham won first place for her essay that addressed the concept of "white privilege." Goyda and Fritschle tied for second, Williams received third place and Kibby received an …
