What's Next for Kirkwood High's Lyons Stadium?

The Kirkwood Board of Education has the stadium project up again on tonight's meeting agenda.

Kirkwood High School's Lyons Stadium renovation plans are on the agenda again for the Kirkwood Board of Education meeting April 1. The Board has been considering plans to revamp bleachers, add restrooms and concessions, and make Lyons Stadium ADA-compliant. After approving the $2.4 million project last December, the Board was "disappointed" with the bid responses and acted to table at the March meeting. This month, after reviewing the bids and noting none made the budget mark, the Board met with engineers and architects to attempt to tweak the project in order to come in less than the budget. The agenda says, even with the efforts to reduce costs, "these changes were not enough to bring the project within budget." The agenda adds that the …

Do you know how many teaching tools and teacher salaries can be enhanced with the $2.4m dollars earmarked for improvements to a stadium that had been updated several times in recent history? It would be great for KHS to focus on surpassing Ladue and Clayton districts academic standing. J Mac did just fine playing on the so so field at KHS.   more ›

Kirkwood High's Lyons Stadium Project Tabled

The Kirkwood Board of Education recognized the stadium as a "project that needs to get done," but opted to postpone a contract decision.

The Kirkwood Board of Education opted last week to table the decision surrounding the next steps of a renovation of Kirkwood High School's E.L. Lyons Memorial Stadium. After the $2.4 million project was approved by the board in December, the board sent out a request for bids with an aim of tackling the redevelopment this summer. Renovations include restrooms, press box, concession stands and ADA-compliant bleachers and seating. "The bids are higher than we expected," Superintendent Dr. Tom Williams said at the board meeting last week. "Now we're going to make a decision whether we have to go back and look at the complete scope of the projects, scale it way back, or whether we table or reject the bids and just start over." Williams said he …

School Board Votes 5-1 to Approve $2.4 Million Overhaul of Kirkwood High Stadium

Renovations that will make the stadium ADA compliant trigger concerns about the use of district funds.

An overhaul of Kirkwood High School's Lyons Stadium that will take place this summer will allow visitors with physical disabilities to access the stadium like never before during the 2013-2014 school year. The Kirkwood School Board voted 5-1 Monday night to approve a $2.4 million project that will make lower level bleachers ADA accessible and provide ADA assistant seating. The project also will add restrooms, concessions and a new press box to the stadium. Although ADA compliance efforts met with support from residents who spoke at Monday's meeting, many voiced concerns that the project is being paid for with reserve money from the Kirkwood School District's maintenance fund. "You owe it to the community to spend tax money the way it is …

For a little more than double what a press box costs ($6 million vs $2.4), Kirkwood could have had an aquatic complex, like the new one at Pattonville. Swimming is a lifelong physical skill enjoyed by all genders and physical disabilities. The dim Meramec pool where the team swims now is 44 years old. The swim schedule is often interrupted without notice for pool repairs. No transportation to …   more ›
