The coach and players of Kirkwood High School's first State Championship Football team receive the highest honors in the region.
Kirkwood High School football coach Matt Irvin and six KHS football players were selected by the Missouri Football Coach’s Association for the all state football team. Head Coach Matt Irvin has been awarded as: For his High School Coach of the Year Award, Coach Irvin will be recognized at the 43rd Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Jack Buck Sports Awards Dinner on Tuesday, Dec. 11. Kirkwood High School will hold a community event at Station Plaza Saturday to celebrate the Pioneers' first state football championship. The celebration will include the KHS band, cheerleaders, football team and notable speakers.

The Turkey Day Game rivalry between the Pioneers and Statesmen is trailing in a USA Today poll that aims to determine the best high school football rivalry in the country. As of Monday evening, the rivalry between Brookfield vs. Marceline high schools had captured 62 percent of votes, making it the front-runner in the competition between Missouri rivalries. Members of the Kirkwood and Webster Groves varsity football teams battled it out in what's becoming a pre-Turkey Day Game tradition at Rock Hill's St. Louis Wing Company.
The Kirkwood Football team beat the Statesmen at Lyons Stadium Nov. 5, but the Pioneers couldn't repeat a victory over Webster when members of the teams squared off for an eating competition last weekend. On Saturday, Rock Hill's St. Louis Wing Company held its second wing-eating competition between members of the schools' varsity football teams. Pioneers Jordan Bishop, Jarrod Bishop and Antonio Weston went head to head with Statesmen Marlon Peal, Zeb Bates and Rob Thompson. The Statesmen came out on top, giving Webster its second St. Louis Wing Company pre-Turkey Day Game victory. For more, visit the St. Louis Wing Company on Facebook. One of my favorite moments of the celebration Saturday was when the humble Coach Irvin noted the players' accomplishments but left out his own honors. Dr. Havener made sure to say something to the crowd after Irvin left the stage. Great coach, great character.   more ›
