Kirkwood Blows Out Holt in Playoff Romping

Rock solid defense and a balanced Pioneer offensive attack led to a 48-0 shutout over the Indians Monday night at home.

Different team. Same result. Like 10 days earlier versus Parkway West, the Kirkwood Pioneers football team racked up another 48-0 shutout, this time against the Holt Indians Monday night at Kirkwood High School. The Pioneers dominated the game by scoring early and often with good field position from three defensive takeaways and a blocked punt. The first Pioneer touchdown, an 8-yard pass from B.J. Buckner to Antonio Weston, was set up when Marquis Terry blocked a Holt punt. Ramon Alton scored his first of two touchdowns a mere 61 seconds later on a 4-yard run. In the second quarter, Buckner connected with Northwestern University recruit Mike McHugh for a 10-yard touchdown pass. With only 1:18 remaining in the first half, Jordan Bishop …

Al, MSHSAA (Missouri State High School Activities Association) currently doesn't seed teams in the playoffs to determine who hosts games. The current system to determine the site (home field) involves factors such as previously hosted games and whether you are on the top or bottom of the playoff bracket... I'm not going to pretend to completely understand it. Not to worry, next year the playoff …   more ›

Kirkwood Turns in Prime-Time Performance at Parkway Central

The Pioneers ride a hot start to a 40-21 victory over the previously unbeaten Colts despite playing most of the game without star receiver Mike McHugh.

On the biggest stage of the season so far for Kirkwood and Parkway Central, one team was clearly ready for the spotlight, and one team clearly was not. As it turned out, with TV cameras rolling and college scouts and recruiters watching from the sidelines, it was the fourth-ranked Pioneers (5-0) who proved to be ready. Behind a sensational performance in all three phases of the game, Kirkwood turned in a convincing 40-21 win over the fifth-ranked Colts (5-1). “The kids played hard and we got some breaks,” Kirkwood coach Matt Irvin said. “We’ve got some more work to do, clearly, but I’m pretty pleased with our kids, that’s for sure.” Indeed he should be, as Kirkwood dominated the action from the opening possession, when it forced a three-…

Game Preview: Kirkwood Takes Spotless Record to Hazelwood Central

Kirkwood is 2-0 and has flashed a very impressive offense this season. The Pioneers play at 1-2 Hazelwood Central in their first road test.

After two dominant home victories to begin its season, Kirkwood has surged to No. 5 in the Class 5 statewide high school football media poll. The Pioneers are yet to be truly tested, as they have routs over Rockwood Summit (36-7) and Seckman (42-7). A tremendous opportunity to show they are a legitimate state title contender awaits on Saturday when Kirkwood plays at Hazelwood Central (1-2) in a 1 p.m. showdown. Kirkwood sits atop the Suburban South Conference, and features a well-balanced offense. Running back Ramon Alton has a team-high 190 yards rushing while highly-regarded receiver Mike McHugh has six receptions for 100 yards. McHugh also has a 69-yard punt return for a touchdown. Look for him to unleash with a big game very soon. …

Kirkwood Begins 2011 Season With Dominant Win Over Summit

Junior running back Ramon Alton paces the Pioneers to a 36-7 victory over visiting Rockwood Summit in the season-opening Suburban South Conference matchup.

Kirkwood senior linebacker Jahmal Hicks says his teammate Ramon Alton is like a superhero. “Ramon Alton is like Clark Kent out there. He can make someone miss in a phone booth,” Hicks said. “He’s a quick guy with amazing skills.” Alton, a 160-pound junior running back, exhibited that ability Friday night with a 64-yard touchdown run and 126 yards on 12 carries in a 36-7 victory over visiting Rockwood Summit in a Suburban South Conference season opener for both teams Part of a thunder-and-lightning combo—or Batman and Robin, if you will—in the backfield with 210-pound back Henry Banks, Alton’s work helped the Pioneers capitalize on five turnovers by Summit in the first half. Kirkwood (1-0) recovered four fumbles, two by senior Jeremiah …

Football Preview: Kirkwood's Hopes Riding With Buckner

Senior quarterback B.J. Buckner hopes to lead the Pioneers to a better mark than their 9-4 record in 2010.

On the heels of leading Kirkwood to a 9-4 season, and a berth in the 2010 Class 5 semifinals, head coach Matt Irvin enters his second season with the Pioneers. Before everything plays out under the lights as the leaves begin to turn brown and the weather cools, Kirkwood could again be making noise in the Suburban South Conference race and the Class 5 playoffs. “It will be a tall order, but we feel like we can be more consistent and get better as the season moves on,” Irvin said. Kirkwood has seven starters back, and there is perhaps no more important piece to the puzzle than senior quarterback B.J. Buckner. Offense: The key to Kirkwood’s ability to light the scoreboard up will rest almost squarely upon the shoulders of Buckner, one the …
