Tonight, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., candidates running for the Kirkwood School Board will meet with residents in a forum moderated by representatives from the League of Women Voters. The event will take place at the cafeteria of North Kirkwood Middle. Two seats of the Kirkwood School Board will be decided at the April 3 municipal election. The two board members whose terms expire this year are John Glunt and Andy Stewart. Glunt is not seeking re-election. The candidates vying for the open seats are incumbent Andy Stewart, Scott Anderson and Sara King. In February, candidate Hamid R. Kirkwood School Board members heard presentations on some of the school district's special programs at its meeting earlier this week.
The Kirkwood School Board evaluated the performance of special district programs, such as ATLAS, VISTA and ELL, at its meeting earlier this week. Romona Miller, assistant principal at Kirkwood High School, and Kelly Nevins, ATLAS department chair, presented a report on the Alternatives Toward Learning and Success program, known as ATLAS at the past meeting of the Kirkwood School Board. There are currently 86 students enrolled in ATLAS, attending special after-school and summer programs to help them recover lost credit and get back on track to academic success. Students apply to the ATLAS program for a variety of reasons, from disability to family illness to teen parenthood. The program offers small class sizes and a 1:6 teacher-student …

Other business at Monday's meeting of the Kirkwood School Board included middle school renovations and approval of a Chinese teacher.
The Kirkwood Board of Education swore in two new members Monday evening, along with Scott Stream who begins his third term on the board. Heidi Meckes and E.J. Miller took their seats on the board, as Matt Cottler and Ruth Jayne took their leave. "My children have left for college, and I'm ready to pass the baton to someone more vested in this district," Jayne said in her farewell speech. "The voters have made a wise choice. I can step back into my life knowing that Kirkwood is in great hands." The board elected Scott Stream as president, Angie Bay as vice president and Andy Stewart as secretary. Voters elected E.J. Miller, Heidi Meckes and Scott Stream to serve on the Kirkwood Board of Education.
The Kirkwood School District Board of Education has gained two new members, Heidi Meckes and E.J. Miller, following Tuesday's elections. Among the four contenders vying for three open seats on the board, Meckes gained the most favor with voters by capturing 29.26 percent of the votes. Voters elected incumbent and current board president Scott Stream to serve a third three-year term on the board, while Steve Hazan just barely fell short of capturing the needed votes to make it past Miller for a spot on the board. Candidates for the Webster Groves Board of Education gathered Wednesday evening at Hixson Middle School to discuss issues facing the district and answer residents' questions. The forum, hosted and moderated by the League of Women Voters, addressed topics including open enrollment, diversity and local control. Each of the four candidates gave a two-minute opening statement, briefly highlighting their qualifications. After the opening statements, the moderator read questions from the community members present, and gave each of the candidates one minute to answer.
