Intruder Disarmament Training Offered to School Districts Around St. Louis

Law enforcement and school district officials shared area crises plans at a Safe Schools Partnership meeting Thursday. Police-led training could be provided to teachers and administrators.

St. Louis area police and school administrators are taking security measures in schools to the next level, even to the point of perhaps conducting training for teachers about how to disarm intruders and negotiate with shooters who invade schools. St. Louis County Police Department officers and members of the Safe Schools Partnership met Thursday morning at the Rockwood School District Administrative Annex in Eureka to continue discussions about how to bolster future safety in schools. St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch said police teams are offering to survey the crises and emergency plans for the corresponding schools they service, especially to ensure everyone involved is operating from the same premises. St. Louis County Crimes Lowest in Four Decades

The 2012 report represents the fourth year in a row of overall crime reduction, according to police data. See which crime categories decreased and which increased.

Serious crime in areas protected by St. Louis County Police Department officers has decreased in 2012, dropping to its lowest level since 1969. The total population served directly by county police is more than 410,000. Index crime statistics comparing 2012 to 2011 in the municipalities served by county officers, as well as unincorporated St. Louis County, show an overall reduction of 8.7 percent.  The county police team stated in a news release the following update: These crime numbers include offenses reported in a community more recently contracted with the county police department last March—the City of Dellwood. Crime has steadily been dropping here in Missouri and especially in St. Louis County since both the Carried Concealed Bill was passed and Chief Fitch was appointed. We should credit it to smart police work and less potential victims on the streets.   more ›

Heroin Education National Award Bestowed on St. Louis County Police Officers

St. Louis County Police Department’s Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Task Force representatives will receive the 2012 “Outstanding Community Prevention Effort Award” in Washington, D.C. on Thursday.

The heroin-deterrent “Not-Even-Once” campaign initiated in the St. Louis metropolitan area by St. Louis County Police Department officers is credited for a 30 percent drop in deaths from the drug since the effort was launched. The campaign's results also were noticed on a larger scale, resulting in the department just receiving a national award in heroin education. The award will be presented Thursday by President Barack Obama’s drug czar, director Gil Kerlikowske of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, in Washington, D.C. The award is given to the task force that exhibits outstanding results in community support, assistance and education in using the cooperative spirit and tenets of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) …

'Ride Of The Century' Event Contained, Say St. Louis County Police

No traffic fatalities, assaults or property damage crimes were reported to the St. Louis County Police Department related to the 2012 “Ride of the Century” annual motorcycle activities.

When the Streetfighterz motorcycle group—known for doing stunts will traveling on highways—came to St. Louis for its annual Ride of the Century, hundreds of bikers from across the country rolled into town on Saturday. Missouri Department of Transportation officials and area police officers stepped up patrols, and drivers took pictures of the ride at various points. In fact, the Missouri Highway Patrol used road blocks to stop hundreds of the group's bikers from traveling on certain highways over the weekend. As many as 1,700 motorcycle riders were estimated to be convening in St. Louis for this event.
