Fans of Pioneer and Statesmen football will have to step it up in order for the Turkey Day Game to move on in a competition to determine the best high school football rivalry in the nation.
The Turkey Day Game rivalry between the Pioneers and Statesmen is trailing in a USA Today poll that aims to determine the best high school football rivalry in the country. USA Today is holding a competition to determine the best high school football rivalry in the country and the Turkey Day Game has put Kirkwood vs. Webster in the running.
The rivalry between the Kirkwood and Webster Groves football teams is epic and steeped in tradition but is it the best high school football rivalry in the nation? That's the question USA TODAY High School Sports has been asking readers. The publication is holding a competition in which readers get to vote for their favorite rivalries with the winning teams receiving $5,000 each. Right now voting, which began Monday, is in the state competition round. Kirkwood vs. Webster is competing with Brookfield vs. Marceline high schools and Hickman and Jefferson City high schools. The story of two Kirkwood Football coaches who led the Pioneers 100 and 90 years ago.
Since 2007, the histories of several Kirkwood High School football coaches have remained elusive. However, due to the increasing number of historical databases and systems of communication being made available in the digital age, two more lost Kirkwood coaches are now found in 2012. Coach John Engerson A hundred years ago, in 1912, Kirkwood football was coached by John Fay Engerson, who was born September 5, 1894 in Six Lakes, Michigan. He attended Lake Odessa High School in Odessa, Michigan and then attended Valparaiso University, in Valparaiso, Indiana, where he matriculated in the spring of 1912 with a degree in manual training. Members of the Kirkwood and Webster Groves varsity football teams battled it out in what's becoming a pre-Turkey Day Game tradition at Rock Hill's St. Louis Wing Company.
The Kirkwood Football team beat the Statesmen at Lyons Stadium Nov. 5, but the Pioneers couldn't repeat a victory over Webster when members of the teams squared off for an eating competition last weekend. On Saturday, Rock Hill's St. Louis Wing Company held its second wing-eating competition between members of the schools' varsity football teams. Pioneers Jordan Bishop, Jarrod Bishop and Antonio Weston went head to head with Statesmen Marlon Peal, Zeb Bates and Rob Thompson. The Kirkwood School District provides a rundown of all the festivities surrounding this year's Turkey Day Game. The first officially recorded Thanksgiving Day football game between Kirkwood High School (KHS) and neighboring Webster Groves High School (WGHS) was held in 1907. Since then, with only a few exceptions, the two schools have met each year on the football field to compete for the “Turkey Day Championship” and the coveted Frisco Bell trophy. More than just a football game, Turkey Day has become a celebration of spirit and pride for both communities. A historic look at an epic battle between Kirkwood and Webster Groves high schools.
Thanksgiving Day, 90 years ago, Kirkwood and Webster were set to play football for the fourth time on Thanksgiving Day since 1907. Since 1913, Kirkwood had not won a single game of football against Webster, but things were different in 1922. In 1919, a former local high school and collegiate football star, Albert P. J. “Hap” (short for “happy”) Bernard became coach of the Kirkwood squad and he advanced the Kirkwood program yearly until, in 1922, the Kirkwood squad played the entire season, not only undefeated, but not even having been scored upon.
