What's Open and Closed on Veterans Day?

Veterans Day is Sunday, so some businesses and government bodies will be closed Monday.

Veterans Day, Nov. 11, falls on a Sunday this year. That means some city offices, services and local businesses will be closed Sunday, while others will be closed Monday. Veteran Day "originated as 'Armistice Day' on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I, according to the U.S. Census website. "Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars." Banks: All banks are closed Monday. Kirkwood High to Welcome 30 Veterans

Kirkwood High School observes Veterans Day with the 20th anniversary of a dynamic speaker program.

The following article was submitted by the Kirkwood School District. As part of the Kirkwood School District’s annual observation of Veterans Day, Kirkwood High School (801 W. Essex) will welcome over 30 veterans on Friday, November 9, 2012.  Veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf will be speaking to students in their social studies classes throughout the day (7:40a.m.-2:40 p.m.) and will have lunch with the students in the cafeteria.  An army truck will arrive on campus at 7 a.m. and be on display near the Dougherty Ferry lot.  The Veterans Day speakers program began in 1993. Kirkwood Youngsters to Honor Veterans

Robinson Elementary will hold a Veterans Day assembly Friday.

Robinson Elementary will be honoring more than 30 service members during their Veterans Day assembly on Friday at 9 a.m. During the ceremony, students will perform the Pledge of Allegiance, sing “The Star Spangled Banner” and recite the Presidential Proclamation. Lt. Kirkwood Veterans Tribute Needs Your Help

Do you know a North Kirkwood Middle School graduate who is a veteran? A group of students wants to hear about them.

Students with a mission to pay tribute to those who have served our country need your help now. The Veterans Service Learning group at North Kirkwood Middle School would like to update its Veterans Tribute Board in the main hallway of the school. In order to do so, students are calling on the community to send them information about NKMS graduate who are veterans. The effort follows NKMS implementing a school-wide initiative to have every student participate in service-learning. Learn more about NKMS service learning here.
