Personalized Gift Store Opens in Downtown Kirkwood

Personalization Station can put a memory on just about anything.

Since 1968, Arch Engraving has put a personal touch on items for businesses and organizations, like schools, sports teams and churches. But over the years, owner Bill Collier realized something. The personalization business, can be, well, more personal. Personalization Station, a branch business of Arch Engraving opened Oct. 26 at the corner of Kirkwood Road and Jefferson Avenue in the retail space formerly occupied by an AT&T store. "We've always been focused on businesses as as our main customer base," Collier said. "Over years, we've had a good number of consumer clients, but we never really marketed to them." The store, which is connected to Arch Engraving, can personalize anything for the everyday shopper. For instance, the store …

Kirkwood Deli & Grocery Gets New Owner

Connie Frahm, a longtime Kirkwood resident and KHS grad, took over the reins of local landmark last week and is loving every minute of it.

Owning Kirkwood Deli & Grocery is like coming full circle for Connie Frahm, a longtime Kirkwood resident and graduate of Kirkwood High School. Frahm took ownership of Kirkwood Deli & Grocery from Sam Abdallah last Tuesday after working for Abdallah for the past six months. Orginally Abdallah approached Frahm about running the business for him but then asked if she would be interested in buying the business. "I said, 'Why not?'" Frahm said. "I love working  here and I get to see all the people I graduated high school with that I haven’t seen in 20, 30 years, so it’s a lot of fun." Frahm remembers visiting the location after school for snacks during her days as a Pioneer. "It's like going full circle," she said, adding that she loves the …

Local Pharmacy to Open in Downtown Kirkwood

Lifelong Kirkwood resident Dr. Paul Hueseman will open Greentree Health Mart Pharmacy Nov. 5. Learn about his passion for patients and the community.

Born and raised in Kirkwood, Dr. Paul Hueseman couldn't be more excited to open a locally owned and operated pharmacy in Downtown Kirkwood. Greentree Health Mart Pharmacy, located at 301 South Kirkwood Road, will open its doors Nov. 5 at the retail space formerly occupied by Hobby Station. For Hueseman, the location is perfect. "I wanted to open a pharmacy in Kirkwood because I love this community, and I grew up here," said Hueseman who graduated from Kirkwood High School in 1992. Kirkwood has not had a local pharmacy for several years, and Hueseman feels its critical to rectify what he calls a shame. "We have so many people in this community that need a pharmacist and need that personal relationship that's more than what you get by going …

The business carries fashion items like purses, hats, sunglasses and jewelry but also gift items like candles and soap. Many of the products are locally made. Art on the Vines: 'A Little Bit About Art, A Lot About Fun'

How creativity and good times come together at Downtown Kirkwood's painting and party studio.

You don’t need an art degree to enjoy one of Downtown Kirkwood’s newest businesses, just a desire to have a good time. That is the concept of Art on the Vines which opened at 121 Suite B North Kirkwood Rd. in July. The “painting/party studio” hosts events where groups can rent out the space for a variety of functions. Participants bring their own drinks and snacks and Art on the Vines provides the supplies and instruction to create paintings. “It’s a little bit about art and a lot about fun,” owner Robert Schrader said. (Get Kirkwood news delivered to your inbox by signing up for our free newsletter) The studio provides a 16 by 20 inch canvas, aprons, brushes and qualified instructors to guide participants in their creations. “Even novice …

Dierbergs Puts Finishing Touches on Soon-to-Open Des Peres Store

The St. Louis-based grocery chain is planning a grand opening for its newest supermarket on Tuesday morning.

Pancakes, paninis, parking and lots of fresh produce are some of the ways Dierbergs is hoping to wow customers at its new store, opening in Des Peres on Tuesday. Workers were busy laying sod and watering new shrubbery outside the multi-level “Market at Des Peres” on Friday. Over the weekend, employees stocked shelves and produce bins to get ready for the unveiling, company spokesman Todd Vasel said. A ribbon cutting is scheduled for 8:35 a.m. Tuesday, followed by the store’s grand opening at 9 a.m. “It’s a Dierbergs store, but it’s got a much different look and feel,” company spokesman Todd Vasel said Friday. “It will be pretty impressive.” All month, Dierbergs featured a “31 things to do” at the Des Peres store on its Facebook page. Dierbergs Intends to Exceed Expectations in Des Peres

The grocery store aims to make its mark in the region with a host of upscale features.

Patrons accustomed to shopping at Dierbergs likely will be surprised when they visit the new Dierbers location that opens Tuesday in Des Peres. At least that's the hope of Dierbergs.  “Our intent was to meet and then exceed customer expectations of what makes a store a Dierbergs store,” Dierbergs president Greg Dierberg said in a news release. “So we focused on areas of growing interest such as meal convenience, wine selection, culinary education, and health and wellness. The result is a store designed not only to be shopped but also experienced.” Dierbergs spokesman Todd Vasel said the new store would have all the usual Dierbergs’ services and features, plus more, including a mezzanine-level dining area, an Evening Tap for beer-lovers, …

Glendale Shoe Store President Fills Parent's Shoes

Mark Waldman runs Laurie's Shoes, a local chain started by his parents in 1948. Its main store is off Manchester Road.

If you walk into Laurie's Shoes in Glendale, you’ll find a device you may have only seen at the deli counter: a number-dispensing machine. The store is not cluttered with boxes of rummaged-through shoes, but neatly arranged display models. Laurie's runs on the old-fashioned concept that customers should be waited on by knowledgeable staff who will measure feet and then bring out a selection shoes from a well-stocked backroom. Owner Mark Waldman believes that providing a high level of customer service sets his shoe stores apart from national chains. “We fit shoes, and the younger generations aren’t used to that,” he said. “We also do orthotics, and we have shoe experts. We’re a white elephant—the last of the independent shoe stores.” He …
