Supporters gathered in Bridgeton Monday night for Senator Claire McCaskill's final campaign rally.
A campaign rally in Bridgeton Monday night drew a crowd of supporters and a couple of celebrities who cheered on Senator Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri). Don King got the crowd going before McCaskill took the stage. McCaskill said that now the focus of the campaign is to make sure supporters get out to vote Nov. 6. On Saturday night, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin held what an aide said would likely be the campaign's last campaign rally in St. Louis prior to Tuesday's general election. At what his campaign described as a "Family Values Rally" at Westminster Christian Academy in Town and Country, Akin, currently the 2nd District U.S. Congressman from Wildwood, touched on familiar themes in his campaign against Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO). Campaign confirms the Missouri Senator has called off campaign events for the remainder of the week.
A campaign spokeswoman confirmed late Tuesday afternoon to Patch that Missouri U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill is off the campaign trail for the rest of the week as her family rallies around her ailing mother, Betty Anne, 84. Earlier, the campaign told the Associated Press that "McCaskill and her siblings plan to be with their mother around-the-clock at the hospital and requested prayers and privacy," at a St. Louis hospital's Intensive Care Unit. Her Republican opponent, U.S. Representative Todd Akin, tweeted a link to the AP story along with words of support. "Our thoughts & prayers are with @clairecmc and her mother," the message said.

In the final debate between Missouri Senate candidates Claire McCaskill and Todd Akin, sharply worded barbs flew as the candidates pushed their talking points. Sen. McCaskill painted the race as one between a moderate vs. extremist. Rep. Akin pushed McCaskill as someone who votes with President Barack Obama "98 percent of the time." The debate, moderated by Mike Bush of KSDK and held at Clayton High School, featured one question each from a panel of local media, the Clayton Chamber of Commerce and a Clayton High School journalism student. The embattled Republican nominee for Missouri Senate is winning back support from those who asked him to drop out of the race.
The AP is reporting that two of Mitt Romney's senior advisors have reversed course and now say they will back Todd Akin in his bid for a Missouri Senate seat. The support comes from a trio of Missouri statesmen, according to the article. Former Missouri senators Jim Talent, now an adivsor to Romney on Russia and defense policy, and Kit Bond both said Friday that they were behind Akin. Missouri Senator and Romney's liason to Congress Roy Blunt said he would back Akin on Tuesday. All three senators had previously called on Akin to drop out following controversial statements he made in a television interview about "legitimate rape." Akin announced on Monday that he was staying the race, despite weeks of negative coverage and the rejection of the National Republican party following his comments on Fox 2 regarding legitimate rape.
