Uncertain Future for Half-Day Kindergarten
The Kirkwood School District’s superintendent held a discussion last Friday with parents about the future of the half day option. He said it is too early to tell how and where it will be offered.
Last Friday, approximately 30 parents gathered in North Kirkwood Middle School’s conference room to have a much-anticipated meeting with Tom Williams, superintendent of schools at the district, to discuss the future of half day kindergarten. Last year, the Kirkwood school board approved the offering of tuition-free, full day kindergarten. A majority of the parents enrolled their children in full day. Those parents who wanted their children to stay half day worried the option would eventually be phased out from the district. At the meeting, Williams gave parents the current enrollment numbers for kindergarten, broken down by the students enrolled in full day or half day kindergarten. I've linked an article from the Washington Post, not known for its conservative bent, on the enormous pressures put on full day kindergarteners due to the common core assessments...of which Kirkwood District must follow. All day kindergarten is not playtime, it's assessments on 5 year old children. The half day kindergarten parents will put a crimp into the system designed to churn out child …   more ›
