Sportsmanship Wins In Parkway North-Kirkwood Baseball Matchup

The first pitch of the game gave at least one player goosebumps.

The record books will show that Parkway North defeated Kirkwood Tuesday afternoon in a win that clinched a conference championship for the Vikings. While Connor Ladig got credit for the win, the victor for the day may be sportsmanship. Parkway North had Brian Thal, a student manager enrolled in the school's Special Education program, take the mound. As Head Baseball Coach Fred Friedman told Patch Blogger Helga Taylor: A couple of weeks ago, our seniors mentioned they wanted Brian to throw out a first pitch for Senior Day, but we wanted him to have a bigger and better experience.  With the gracious support of Coach Shaw and Kirkwood, we were able to arrange for him to actually be the starting pitcher of record, and for Brian's safety, …

Former Teacher Pleads Guilty to Assaulting, Supplying Liquor to Students

Trevor Davenport, of Kirkwood, received two years probation, 15 days in jail and must surrender his teaching certificate.

A former teacher pleaded guilty April 8 to assaulting a teenage girl and supplying two teenagers with liquor in Kirkwood. Trevor Davenport, 29, of the 800 block of North Geyer Avenue in Kirkwood, was sentenced to 15 days in jail for the assault charge and was placed on two years probation for the liquor charge. Davenport, formerly a teacher in the Lincoln County School District, gave beer and Triple sec to a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old girl on Jan. 22 or Jan 23, 2011 at his home. According to court documents, Davenport also touched the 16-year-old girl’s breast and asked if she’d be willing to have sex with him. The girls were students at Troy Buchanan High School, where Davenport taught until he resigned after being charged. Davenport …

Letter to the Editor

OPINION: Kirkwood Resident Voices Concerns Over School District's Pay Increases

Kirkwood resident Joe Whitnall is concerned about recent pay increases for Kirkwood School District teachers. He wrote the following Letter to the Editor voicing his concerns.

Dear school officials, staff: A couple of concerns about the pay increase recently approved: Why was this decided before the county's property valuations were released?  Wouldn't it make sense to get a handle on potential revenue before locking into a half-million dollar added expense?  Clayton, other districts are waiting until next month.  The Kirkwood decision appears reckless and self-indulgent.   Why isn't the pay increase on the home page of the district's web site?   Personnel, after all, is the district's biggest expense, and this pay hike is a significant increase, also affecting pension expenses.  I had to click several times before finding the issue in board minutes.  The introduction reported only the new starting salary.  Why …

I agree with Dan Sullivan. Citizens of Kirkwood, if you do not like the actions of the current board, you are the only one who has the power to change that. April 2nd, you can go to the polls and vote, it matters, it affects you, it impacts your children or the child down the street. This is not something that should be the status quo or popularity contest. What do you need from the Board of …   more ›

Transportation Museum Gets New Piece: 1952 Wabash Caboose

The restored railroad car has been kept on the property of an Olivette home for two decades and will be moved on Tuesday.

Railroad fans, you're getting another treat at Kirkwood's Museum of Transportation on Tuesday. If everything goes as planned, the museum, working with the Missouri Department of Transportation and Select Transport Inc. of St. Louis, will be loading up a 1952, fully-restored Wabash Railroad red caboose onto two flat-bed trucks on Monday. The caboose, a fixture for years in the Olivette community, will be moved to the Museum of Transportation at 3015 Barrett Station Road, some 20 miles to the west and the south. The move is expected to start on Tuesday at 9 a.m., to avoid a Missouri Department of Transportation fine for making this kind of move after 3:30 p.m. The caboose, signals and small portion of track have been at the home of Vance …

Kirkwood Communications Tower Reportedly on Hold, For Now

A 190-foot communications tower planned for Kirkwood Park is temporarily on hold, according to the Webster-Kirkwood Times.

According to the Webster-Kirkwood Times, plans for a 190-foot communications tower in Kirkwood Park along Couch Avenue have been put on hold at least a month. The Webster-Kirkwood Times reports the decision to delay the plan for the tower is the result of a suggestion from Chief Administrative Officer Mike Brown. The tower would be part of a network of towers around the area that would help provide coordinated communications among first responders. The following details about the plans for communications towers around St. Louis County came from a portion of the Webster-Kirkwood Times article. The nexus of the network will be a 32,000-square-foot, $16-million communications center under construction in Ohlendorf West Park in Ballwin. …

Want Your Kirkwood Yard to Look Like This?

Residents can get up to $2,000 for landscaping improvements. The program is part of an initiative to limit how much rain water runs off into area waterways.

Starting this month, Kirkwood residents have the chance to apply for up to $2,000 in grants to help property owners landscape their yards in a way that improves how stormwater is managed. The so-called "rainscaping" initiative is operated through the Deer Creek Watershed Alliance and, according to a recent article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, is designed to help residents plant native vegetation and other modifications on their property that would to limit rainwater seepage into nearby waterways. The Deer Creek Watershed Alliance is a partnership between the Missouri Botanical Garden, the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District, this area's office of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the…
