Internet Pushes Kirkwood Movie Toward Big Screen

“Casualties of the State” enters post-production after an outpouring of online donations.

Crowd-funding, a form of supporting artistic projects through small online donations, can give moviemakers the push they need to see their visions through or fall on blind eyes. For independent film Casualties of the State, Internet users saw the potential of the Kirkwood-produced FBI thriller and stepped up to the plate. Casualties of the State, a film that examines political elites profiting at the expense of U.S. lives, needed $5200 to cover post-production costs such as sound mixing, special effects, color correction and a musical score. Its crowd-funding campaign on IndieGoGo kicked off March 23. By the time funding closed May 7, the movie had netted $6000. Before the start of the campaign, writer and producer Alan Lamberg, a full-…

Journalist Rick Desloge Dead from Pancreatic Cancer

A talented writer who also was a regular reporter on KMOX Radio made his home in Kirkwood.

Updated: 2:18 p.m. I’m trying to absorb the shocking news. KMOX Radio just reported that Rick Desloge, age 63, lifetime journalist had died of pancreatic cancer. I am in a state of mourning. Fellow Patch editor Dan Barger, Fenton-High Ridge tipped me last week that Rick was really in bad shape, and was moved to Hospice Care at home. This is how it was just reported on KMOX Radio. Here is how the Business Journals reported Rick's passing to its readers. In the print business, there are unions and there are brotherhoods. Dan, Rick and I all toiled under the watchful eye of Frank Bick and Howard Etling at the Suburban Journals. Both of these gentlemen are still alive, way up in their salad years. They will be heartbroken to hear the news. …

Original Composition 'Kirkwood' Puts Music to History (VIDEO)

The Kirkwood School District Music Department collaborated with composer Clancy Weeks to create a piece of chamber music that captures the spirit of Kirkwood.

An original composition, "Kirkwood" tells the story of some of Kirkwood's oldest traditions and gives a musical nod to Scottish "founder," James P. Kirkwood. The Kirkwood School District Music Department collaborated with composer Clancy Weeks in writing the sheet music for a piece performed by the Kirkwood High School Woodwind Chamber Ensemble.  The first movement, Battle for the Bell, is the annual “Turkey Day” football game between Kirkwood and Webster Groves; the second movement, Missouri River Runner, is an impression of the journey as the train passes by and over the Missouri River; and the third movement Greentree Parade represents the cherished local festival. Take a listen by clicking the above video and let us know if you think …

She had been living in a furnished apartment provided by insurance after her house burned down. When Hess’ mother returned July 9, she discovered two flat screen televisions were missing from the apartment. Target Says Bye-bye to Amazon's Kindle, Des Peres Analyst Weighs In

Amazon.com Kindle brand of e-readers and tablets will be off the store's shelves by the end of the month.

Patrons of the Kirkwood Target will no longer be able to compare Amazon's Kindle and Kindle Fire to other popular e-readers and tablets at the big-box retailer. Target has decided to stop carrying Amazon.com Kindle e-readers and tablets with all related products out of stores by the end of the month, Bloomberg Businessweek reported Wednesday Matt Arnold, an analyst for Edward Jones & Co. in Des Peres told Businessweek, that the move makes sense given competition between Target and Amazon's online store as well as Target's decision to dedicate more store space to Apple products. HoneyBaked Ham CEO Visits Kirkwood

Chuck Bengochea toured area stores this week and planned to lead a seminar about branding Thursday at Saint Louis University.

Chuck Bengochea is chief executive of The HoneyBaked Ham Company and an Iron Man triathlete who bikes regularly. So he loves the fact that he can help employees grow professionally and personally as part of his job. It's "such a privilege to do that," Bengochea said Wednesday during a stop at the company's Kirkwood store. That commitment carries over to HoneyBaked Ham and brand promise, a subject the CEO plans to speak about Thursday morning at Saint Louis University as part of the Institute for Private Business Seminar Series. Bengochea, 55, left Coca-Cola for HoneyBaked Ham in 1995. He knew Coke was a well-respected brand. But he didn't know what people thought about the company that sells hams, turkeys, gift baskets and other products. …
